What is XONITEK?

XONITEK Consulting Group International LLC is a globally capable operational excellence consulting firm founded in 1985 by Joseph F. Paris Jr. in Endicott, New York. Over four decades and six continents, XONITEK has delivered strategic advisory, business transformation, workforce development, and technology consulting to multinational corporations, state-owned enterprises, and high-growth businesses across eight core competency areas.

The firm defines Operational Excellence as “a state of readiness attained as the efforts throughout the organization reach a state of alignment for achieving its strategies — and where the corporate culture is committed to the continuous and deliberate improvement of company performance and the circumstances of those who work there.” This conviction has been the golden thread through four deliberate business transformations since 1985 — from IT systems integration through ERP consulting, Lean Six Sigma, and into full Operational Excellence program design and deployment.

XONITEK’s distinguishing capability is deploying seasoned subject matter experts with at least a decade of industry-specific experience — not generalists — across every geography it serves. The firm moves quickly from assessment to action, with the goal of delivering meaningful results starting on the very first day of engagement.

Our History

XONITEK: Founded 1985, Four Transformations, One Purpose

“When you are a small business, it’s critically important to find a niche where your value-add is unique and you can realize a premium for your offering.”

XONITEK was founded in August of 1985 by Joseph F. Paris Jr. in Endicott, New York — a stone’s throw from the original headquarters building of IBM. The name was chosen because, as Paris put it, “it sounded cool and didn’t mean anything.” Start-up capital totalled $3,000.

XONITEK’s story is one of deliberate, disciplined reinvention — not reactive scrambling, but a consistent pattern of reading the horizon, recognizing when a market was becoming commoditized, and transitioning purposefully into the next area of value before the previous one became untenable. Each transformation was not sudden; the previous practice was phased out carefully as the next was brought online.

By 2008, having built a solid practice in Continuous Improvement and Lean Six-Sigma, Paris recognized a deeper opportunity: to architect and deploy true Operational Excellence programs — connecting the aspirations of the C-suite to the realities of the shop floor. Today, XONITEK operates as a globally capable consulting group, trusted by multinational corporations and state-owned enterprises on six continents to deliver results from the very first day of engagement.

Through every reinvention, one thing never changed. Our underlying passion has always been to help organizations operate better as organizations — pursuing horizontal integration across functions, teams, and value chains, not merely vertical optimization within individual silos. Technology, processes, and methodologies have come and gone; this principle has not. It is the golden thread that binds every transformation XONITEK has made — and the conviction that drives us to help our clients become high-performance organizations.

The Competitive Imperative

The competitive advantage will go to those organizations that can see further beyond the horizon than their competition — recognizing opportunities and threats sooner, devising and deploying decisive responses more quickly, and making adjustments in real-time as circumstances unfold. They will have to make decisions more quickly and more boldly — often synthesizing a course of action from incomplete data. They will have to become high-performance organizations.

What Sets XONITEK Apart

Experience and ability to deploy worldwide, across cultures and time zones.

Highly motivated and success oriented — we are invested in your outcome.

Seasoned subject matter experts in a variety of industries and disciplines.

Ability to convert ideas to action rapidly using prescriptive but personalized approaches.

If required, can ensure all resources are citizens of the United States — many with active security clearances.

1985

Initial Incarnation — IBM PC Clones

Joseph F. Paris Jr. founds XONITEK Systems Corporation in Endicott, New York. The business model: assemble and sell IBM PC “clones” — sourcing components and building machines fully compatible with IBM PCs at 20% less than name-brand competitors, while still achieving a 25% gross margin. The firm progressed through Intel 80286, 80386, and 80486 processor generations before mail-order purchasing commoditized the market and margins evaporated.

1987

Transformation #1 — Systems Integrator & Network Engineering

As clone hardware became a commodity, XONITEK reinvented itself as a systems integrator and network engineering firm — working with customer-purchased equipment and charging for engineering, integration, and maintenance rather than hardware margins. The firm expanded its geographic footprint beyond Binghamton, executing major projects including the design and installation of approximately 25 miles of fiber-optic cable in a hospital near Liberty, New York. The previous hardware business was phased out as this practice scaled.

1988

Transformation #2 — Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

As network engineering and systems integration commoditized in turn, XONITEK became a Value-Added Reseller (VAR) for Realworld and then Macola — full-suite ERP solutions for manufacturing, supporting modules from accounting and distribution through production scheduling, logistics, and supply chain. By the early 1990s, Macola was the firm’s settled ERP platform. Additional solutions — including Baan, MK from Computer Associates, and Navision (later acquired by Microsoft) — were added in the run-up to Y2K. The network engineering practice was wound down as ERP consulting became the core offering, remaining so through the early 2000s.

2005

Transformation #3 — Continuous Improvement & Lean Six Sigma

Following a catalytic “Grow or Go” summit in 2005 and years of growing dissatisfaction with the ERP ecosystem, Paris reinvented XONITEK around Industrial and Systems Engineering — delivering consulting engagements in Lean (the Toyota Production System), Six Sigma, and Continuous Improvement for publicly traded manufacturers with international footprints. Two separate entities were created: XONITEK Consulting Group International for the new practice, and XONITEK Technology Group for the legacy ERP offering. The ERP business was phased out as the CI practice matured and took hold.

2008

Transformation #4 — Operational Excellence

Having built a strong Continuous Improvement practice, Paris recognized that “spot” improvement initiatives — however successful individually — were not delivering sustained, organization-wide transformation. In May 2008, he began articulating a more complete framework: Operational Excellence as a discipline in its own right. He created the Operational Excellence Group on LinkedIn, authored the Operational Excellence Manifesto, and founded the Operational Excellence Society — establishing the definitional and organizational foundation for what XONITEK delivers to its clients today. The Continuous Improvement label gave way to Operational Excellence as the firm’s defining practice.

“Operational Excellence is a state of readiness that is attained as the efforts throughout the organization reach a state of alignment for achieving its strategies; and where the corporate culture is committed to the continuous and deliberate improvement of company performance AND the circumstances of those who work there – and is precursor to becoming a high-performance organization.”

Joseph F. Paris Jr. is the founder and Chairman of the XONITEK Group of Companies — a globally recognized authority on Operational Excellence, organizational performance, and business strategy. He founded XONITEK in 1985 with a clear conviction: that operational excellence is not a management program or a set of tools, but a fundamental state of organizational readiness — achieved when strategy, culture, people, and process are fully aligned and relentlessly pursued.

Over four decades, Joseph has built a career defined by the breadth of its scope and the depth of its impact. He has consulted for multinational corporations, government agencies, family enterprises, and emerging organizations across six continents — bringing the same rigorous, results-first approach to every engagement regardless of industry or geography.

Joseph is the author of State of Readiness — a landmark work on organizational leadership, performance management, and the pursuit of operational excellence. He is also the creator of Design Thinking for Operational Excellence (DT4OpEx®) — a proprietary methodology that applies the principles of human-centered design to operational problem-solving, enabling organizations to compress the time from challenge identification to implemented solution.

A sought-after speaker, facilitator, and thought leader, Joseph founded and chairs the Operational Excellence Society — a global professional community bringing together practitioners, academics, and executives committed to the advancement of operational excellence as a discipline.

Thirty years inside manufacturing plants, supply chains, and boardrooms on six continents. The goal of every engagement: accomplish something meaningful on the very first day, move quickly from assessment to action, and measure success not by the length of an engagement but by how rapidly the client takes ownership of the environment created together.
