Message from the Founder

“For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come!”

-William Shakespeare

It is that time of year.  The trees have lost their leaves in a blaze of glory; going from green to barren and brown in a matter of days.  For the next couple of weeks, we will be reminded of the destiny of our finality – even the temptation of conjuring the spirit world with traditions such as Halloween or visiting the graves of our ancestors on All Souls Day.  But people are an optimistic lot and this reflection on our mortality is but momentary – soon to be replaced by holidays of the harvest and renewal with the desolation of death being replaced by twinkling lights, sparkling baubles, and the sounds of joy.

Professional Development and Networking using Social Media

If you are reading this, you probably engage in professional networking on social media.  And if you are like me, you have been engaging for a very long time.

The motivation is probably similar to mine.  You want to learn and understand what’s going on in your profession, your industry, your community – and probably the world at large – so you can remain aware and up to date on the latest information and know-how.

And you want to meet people who can support you in your endeavors and aspirations and, hopefully, you want to help others in a similar fashion.

Of course, there is much more to engaging in social media.  But if you agree with the above, then you and I are in alignment…

Most companies strive to be high-performing organizations – the equivalent of having “six-pack abs”.  But getting fit takes a lot of dedication and hard work – and unfortunately, most companies just have “ab”.  In this episode of The Outliers Inn, Jim will share with us his experiences in trying to help companies become leaner and meaner; the challenges companies face, the challenges he has faced, how they were overcome (or not), what has worked, what has not worked, and the perils and pitfalls to recognize and avoid.

Our guest in this episode of “State of Readiness” is Donald Kuk; continuous improvement expert extraordinaire.  He started his continuous improvement journey in the mid-1990’s at General Electric when he was personally selected by Jack Welch to join Jack and a select group of others senior leaders at GE in the very class to be trained in Six Sigma – taught by the original Six Sigma Guru himself, the late Mikel Harry.  Since then, Donald has held senior leadership positions at JP Morgan – Chase, Computer Associates, AIG, BNY Mellon, and now Mednax (a leading healthcare provider in the States).

Wicked Problems

There are all manner of problems (being an optimist, I rather use the term “challenge”) that we face each and every day.
Most of these challenges are simple enough, but some challenges are more complex. And then, there are
“wicked problems”.A “wicked problem” is not a problem that is inherently evil – but, rather, a problem whose complexity is such that any approach to resolve is incredibly difficult (or quite possibly impossible) to formulate and deploy.  The nature of wicked problems is that they consist of a large number of requirements and variables which are contradictory, fluid, and even unknown…
